Coming to Christ at an early age, Barbara also felt a call to ministry early on. Soon after completing university, Barbara began what would become a journey of about 13 years of vocational ministry, working in the areas of education and social work with Christian organizations. Most of this work was done in an urban context (Chicago, IL, USA) and with African Americans and Latinos, thereby growing cross-cultural experience.
Following this period of time, in 2008, Barbara had the opportunity to return a second time to Kenya, spending a little more than 3 months serving with a ministry. Upon returning to the States, Barbara completed an intensive year at Moody Theological Seminary and significantly, met a young Ugandan man (Richmond Wandera) who was working on a master’s degree and growing a vision to equip pastors. Barbara then spent three years on staff at Judson Baptist Church, filling several roles during that time. Finally, in 2014, Barbara re-connected with Richmond and agreed to come to serve with his ministry for a time.
Serving in Uganda :
Barbara served for almost 5 years with Pastors Discipleship Network (founded by Richmond) which trains, equips and resources the African pastor. Barbara served in numerous ways developing programs and teaching materials, training pastors’ wives and teaching at pastors’ conferences, as well as for a time, overseeing PDN’s library and resource department. (These five years were separated by a gap of about 2 years during which time Barbara completed her master’s degree in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship at Moody Seminary.)
Currently, Barbara is serving with Living Word Uganda, a ministry that focuses on teaching faithful Bible handling to university students, church lay leaders, and pastors. Besides working with university students, Living Word partners with the local church to equip believers with the principles of faithful biblical exegesis and exposition. Barbara supports the staff in the work of this important ministry.
For Barbara, her focus in ministry is the teaching of good doctrine and upholding the Word of God, as well as discipleship, spiritual formation and soul care, all key ingredients woven into interactions with very many people. Training leaders has particular significance as they are the ones to influence and pass on truth to others. To this end, Barbara is pursuing developing a ministry with a pastor- friend to disciple and mentor church and marketplace leaders. She also enjoys ministering to hurting people, especially young women in need of encouragement, counsel, or discipling. Finally, she occasionally will support friends and local ministries with her skills of editing manuscripts/books, developing curriculum, or perhaps writing articles or recording podcasts.
